Cryolipolysis is mostly preferred today, as other invasive fat loss processes are associated with various health complications. This process was developed from the clinical observations of a cold-induced phenomenon called “popsicles panniculitis.” In 1970, Oren and Epstein coined the term. Popsicles panniculitis is medical condition observed in young children wherein, redness and swelling will be seen on the cheeks for 6- 48 hours after sucking an ice-cube or a popsicle. In rare cases, dimples are also formed after sucking the ice-cube. This condition is rarely observed in adults too.
The theory behind Cryolipolysis is that adipocytes that are lipid-rich are more sensitive to the cold temperatures than other cells around them which are water-rich.
Another group of researchers from Harvard University in 2007, further the studied this process, and the same principle was involved in the fat reduction process with freezing technique, and termed it as Cryolipolysis.
During the Cryolipolysis, the fat cells undergo necrosis. Up to certain temperature, the fat cells can tolerate the cold exposure.But after that, these undergo crystallization and die. This way fat cells are destroyed.
Cryolipolysis cannot be employed in all cases. In the case of few health conditions like, cardiovascular disorders, frostbite intolerance, Blood pressure abnormalities, organ transplantations, etc., before the treatment, Cryolipolysis must be strictly avoided, as it cause severe complications.
